Faeces can be assessed for organisms including bacteria, viruses and the presence of parasites. Faecal elastase is a test which can look for pancreatic insufficiency. There are other tests to look for blood loss and inflammation. Faecal calprotectin is increasingly used to help diagnose and monitor inflammatory bowel diseases. Other faecal tests can also sometimes help in the diagnose of carbohydrate malabsorption as well as provide clues into maldigestion and malabsorption.
